Hi, I'd like to propose that the Mediaset article is split into the articles Mediaset (about MFE's businesses within Italy) and MFE - MediaForEurope (about MFE as a whole). JSH-alive (keskustelu) 4. huhtikuuta 2023 kello 12.23 (EEST)[vastaa]

Hello

I recently edited an article on Kati Lukka on Wikipedia in French, and I have a problem translating a title.

It's "Kahden teatterintekijän rosojen ja runojen tupa" on Eeva [1]. I translate it as the English equivalent of "Two female theatre-makers in a house of tales and poems". Does that sound right, or do you have a better translation for me? ("female theatre-makers" sounds a bit strange, but we have feminine forms in French)

Regards, SyntaxTerror (keskustelu) 24. lokakuuta 2023 kello 11.37 (EEST)[vastaa]

@SyntaxTerror: you're not too far off with your translation. However, "roso" means something rough or rugged. Directly translated, the title would be something like "Two theatre-makers' hut of ruggedness and poems", so I'd use either that or maybe "Two theatre-makers in a rugged hut of poems", if you'd prefer having it that way around. --Lentokonefani asiaa? | syntilista 24. lokakuuta 2023 kello 11.51 (EEST)[vastaa]
Thank you for your quick answer Lentokonefani. I wasn't reading it like that, i.e. that it was adjectives for "tupa". Even with your help, it is difficult to find a good translation in French, as these two words have obviously been choosen for their similarity rather than their exact meaning I guess.
Could the word "rosojen" have a figurative meaning, describing not the physical appearance of the hut, but the impression you get from it? Like in the sentence I found on https://www.kielitoimistonsanakirja.fi/#/roso : "Päähenkilön siloiseen kuvaan olisi kaivattu enemmän rosoa elävyyttä, ristiriitaisuutta, uskottavuutta tms".
By looking at the photos in the article, maybe "Two dramatists in a worn out hut of poems" or "a poetic worn out hut" would be a good translation ? It would be easier to translate in French as it would give something like "Deux dramaturges dans une poétique cabane vétuste".
SyntaxTerror (keskustelu) 24. lokakuuta 2023 kello 13.10 (EEST)[vastaa]
@SyntaxTerror: the "roso" in this case definitely has something to do with the figurative side as well, meaning that not everything in the hut is new, shiny and stylish, but rather that the impression you get is homely and cozy. Partially it also means physical appearance, not of the house itself but the objects within, as according to the article, many pieces of furniture are old, used and a bit worn, maybe even slightly rough-looking. So I'd say "roso" refers to the overall look and feel of the interior decoration. I agree that finding a good translation is tricky. "Worn out" is probably quite close, as long as it has the connotation of "un-refurbished antiques" and not "in poor condition, needs repairs" – my French is unfortunately very limited, so I have no clue which one of these vétuste is closer to. --Lentokonefani asiaa? | syntilista 24. lokakuuta 2023 kello 13.54 (EEST)[vastaa]
@Lentokonefani : one meaning of vétuste is "which is old and deteriorating". I think that I'll use this for the moment, until I have a better idea, or that someone speaking both French and Finnish gives a better translation.
Thank you for your help. Best regards, SyntaxTerror (keskustelu) 24. lokakuuta 2023 kello 14.17 (EEST)[vastaa]
À mon avis, dans ce cas rosojen a une signification positive. Donc, rosoinen = peut-être vieux ou imparfait, mais aussi intéressant et original. À propos, est-ce que on peut les appeler dramaturges en français? Elles ne sont pas de femmes de lettres mais une décoratrice et une costumière. Professionelles du théâtre? -193.210.162.187 24. lokakuuta 2023 kello 17.31 (EEST)[vastaa]
Playwright (fr:dramaturge) has taken on a broader meaning in French these days. One could also use "femmes de théatre".
The exact meaning is less important than having a catchy, good sounding title in my opinion, one shouldn't look at each word separately, but at the sentence as a whole. Anyway, it's just a translation of the title, not the article, and the original title is right next to it.
The problem is that in French you can't really make compound words like 'teatterintekijän', or find two words close enough to make a paronomasia like 'rosojen ja runojen'. It's a very poetic title, and translating poetry is unfortunately not something everyone can easily do, myself included...

European 112 Day dupes?[muokkaa wikitekstiä]

It seems to me that Koko Euroopan hätänumero 112:n päivä and 112-päivä describe the same thing. Could you please check this and merge the two if appropriate? -- Reise Reise (keskustelu) 12. helmikuuta 2024 kello 17.24 (EET)[vastaa]

Yes, well spotted. They are now merged into 112-päivä. --Lentokonefani asiaa? | syntilista 27. toukokuuta 2024 kello 22.07 (EEST)[vastaa]

Hello, Embassy officials at the Finnish Wikipedia. As I do not know Finnish, I am wary of editing the article for Lee Hsien Loong myself, but I would like to update this article to state that Lee Hsien Loong ended his tenure as prime minister on 15 May 2024. Is there someone that can do that? Thanks. 3PPYB6 (keskustelu) 27. toukokuuta 2024 kello 04.20 (EEST)[vastaa]
